Important health checks for menopause and post menopause …

Keeping a check on bone density
Many women can neglect to keep a check on their bone density which at this phase in a woman’s life can become depleted through a drop in oestrogen which slows down the rate of bone breakdown – the onset of menopause can threaten bone health resulting in brittle bones. Discuss having a bone density test done with your GP and seek their advice in relation to ensuring your diet is high in calcium.

GPs who are concerned about bone density can sometimes recommend HRT, balanced diet and plenty of weight bearing exercise.  Plant based oestrogens i.e. phyto oestrogens found in soya have been said to support bone density, although studies are ongoing.

Cardiovascular Disease
Oestrogen helps to reduce cholesterol in the bloodstream and reduces the risk of hardening and clogging of the coronary arteries. While cardiovascular disease is uncommon in women before menopause, women need to keep a check on their cholesterol having it checked by their GP.

Where can I get more advice?

There is no dedicated service for women going through the menopause, so talk to your GP or pharmacist.  Keep a  good eye on your general health and be informed on symptoms and options.  Some of the following will provide you with more information.
